Navdeep’s Ultimate Hot Toddy Recipe

After a lovely weekend of sunshine in New York City, out of nowhere I came down with a full on cold – sore throat, sniffles, the works. My immediate reaction is to skip the cold medicine and go straight to making myself a warm mug of Hot Toddy, the medicine for grownups. I really don’t need to be feeling under the weather to enjoy it. Just the name makes me feel giddy, my steps more sprightly. In a completely alpha male sort of way. There are Hot Toddy Hardliners on such controversial issues as the use of sweeteners, or the age-old lemon zest vs lemon wedge vs lemon juice. I use whatever floats my metaphoric boat (my real one does not require spices or…

Review: Emeril’s Delmonico Steakhouse, New Orleans

Since our trip to New Orleans was to celebrate our anniversary, on our final night in Crescent City, we decided to fancy it up. So I did a little research into some of the finer dining in town — which meant abandoning our stomping grounds on Bourbon Street, of course. And when people think New Orleans cuisine, they still think Emeril. BAM! Since we were staying on Bourbon, getting to the posh Garden District, home of all those old school mansions and Emeril’s Delmonico steakhouse, meant taking a trolley ride! YAY! We’d been in town four days, but had yet to leave the French Quarter, so the trolley was super-fun. We hoped the St. Charles line for a 15-minute slide through town, cutting through…

Ain’t Nothing But a Swamp Thing, Baby!

At the top of Navdeep’s list when he found out we were going to Louisiana? A traipse through the bayou, of course. He’s always had a bit of a thing for gators, so he couldn’t resist the chance to see them up close and personal. We just didn’t realize quite how up close we’d come! We booked a Monday a.m. outing via the stellar Cajun Encounters, who had also arranged for our plantation visit the day before. We knew we’d be cutting it close — our flight was at 3 p.m. that afternoon — but the round-trip adventure, all told, clocked in at about five hours, including an 8 a.m. pick-up and a 1 p.m. drop-off. Monday dawned hot but thankfully not uber-humid, as…

New Orleans Food Craving: Just Gimme a Salad

So two days into our trip, and we’ve had plenty of po’boys, french fries, fried oysters, fried shrimp, fried sugar-doused beignets and all that other crazy (fried) food. Naturally, now I’m craving a salad. At every meal. It happens every time. We go to some place known for its decadent, over-the top food, and my body rebels. In Vegas with the buffets. In Hawaii with the luau spread of spit-roasted meats. Nuh-uh, my body says. It’s like: “Sona, you’re killing me with this crap. Now get me some vegetables.” For lunch on our first day here, we had chili dogs and sausages. No vegetables of any kind. Thursday night, for dinner, we went to this iconic oyster bar at our hotel called Desire. The…

Riveting Post on Just Getting To The Airport For Our New Orleans Adventure!

We leave the house on time to get to the airport this morning. A first for us in quite a while. We didn’t have diaper bags to pack, milk bottles to fill, or a sleeping baby to manhandle into her car seat. It felt strange kissing her goodbye as we got into the car with exactly two carry-ons that were relatively organized. Since Kavya was born, this is the only trip we’ve ever taken without her. But she’s in good hands: Sona’s mum and dad graciously offered to watch Kavya, or as Sona’s dad put it “hang out” while me and Sona celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary in New Orleans. It seems like we’ve known each other forever and I don’t remember a time…

Video: Riding Underwater Scooters in Oahu, Hawai’i

Since we had already jumped out of a plane in Oahu, we decided to go the opposite direction this time. We found out about riding around in the ocean on submersible scooters through Groupon, and couldn’t resist. Even my 73-year-old father was down to go. Check out the video above to see how it all went at Island Watersports, Hawaii.
